Sigung David Cliffe

Sigung David Cliffe is the head instructor of the CWAA. Sigung has over 30 years experience in the martial arts, with 10 of those years spent teaching at Ching Wu. In 1993 Sigung and a number of his students competed at the national level resulting in Sigung becoming a national champion as well as a member of the 1993 Canadian Wushu Team. His competition record includes:

  • North America Tae Kwon Do Championships - 1st place in full contact sparring division
  • Sikaran Tournament of Champions - 1st place in weapons division
  • Green Dragon Invitational - 1st place in long weapon division
  • Dragon's Den Mid-Canadian Martial Arts Open - 1st place in long weapons division
  • Canadian Wushu Championships - 1st place traditional Tai Chi division, 1st place long weapon division

Sigung has trained with many renowned masters such as Joseph Chen and Andrea Falk for tai chi, Sylvio Behring for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Hangting Shen for White Crane Kung Fu, and Master Xu Gong Wei for Chaquan.  In addition, while in Japan Sigung trained in Judo at the Kodokan, and in Shorinji Kempo at the Chuo Budokan. He has also competed successfully in local and national martial arts events, in both forms division and full contact sparring. In March of 2006, Sigung traveled to the Shaolin Temple in Henan, China for extensive testing, critiquing, and instruction, resulting in Ching Wu being accepted as an associate school representing the Shaolin Temple in Canada.

Sigung retired from formal competition following his national championship. Several of his former students continue to do well in competitions, some with schools of their own. For a complete list of Sigung's training history see below.

 
Master Huang
Master Huang Guo Qing

Master Huang Guo Qing is a ninth generation lineage holder of the Seven Star Praying Mantis system. Master Huang began his martial arts training in 1972 at the age of seven, and he is certified by the Chinese Wushu Association as Martial Art Level 7 (7th Dan). His competition record includes:

  • First Session of Martial Arts and Free Fighting Competition (Guangzhu, Dec. 1999) - 1st place men's free fighting (65kg)
  • 2005 Guangzhu Traditional Martial Arts Competition - 1st place Chinese boxing (men's group A)
  • 2005 Guangzhu Traditional Martial Arts Competition - 1st place traditional boxing, Northern style (men's group B)
Master Huang Came to Canada in 2008 at the invitation of the Ching Wu Athletic Association. He now heads the Praying Mantis Kung Fu program at our school in Winnipeg's Chinatown.
 
Senior Instructor Randall Flower
Sifu Randall Flower has been involved with Ching Wu since 1995 and achieved Black Belt in Shaolin Kung Fu on March 15, 2008.
 
Senior Instructor Aidan Morrison
Sifu Aidan Morrison began training in Shaolin Kung Fu at Ching Wu in 2001 and passed his Black Belt examination on March 18, 2008.
 
Senior Instructor Ryan Tomko
Sifu Ryan Tomko has been a member of Ching Wu since 1996 and was promoted to Black Belt in 2002. Sifu Tomko was Senior Instructor of Shaolin Kung Fu for many years and he is now Senior Instructor of the Ching Wu lion dance team.

Training Experience
1972-1977Trained in Judo at the Shidokan in Montreal under Sensei Hiroshi Nakamura and Sensei Akio Nakamura.
1972-1977Trained in Shaolin Goshin and Jujitsu at the Lalonde Academie in Montreal under Sensei René Lalonde.
1978-1982Trained in Northern Shaolin, Praying Mantis, Wing Chun, and Shorin Ryu Karate at the Black Dragon Kung-Fu School in Winnipeg under Les Kaszas.
1979-1981Trained in Aikido at the Wild Tiger Self-Defence Combat Club in Winnipeg under Roger Richard.
1984-1988Trained in Wushu and T'ai Chi at the Wushu Centre in Montreal under Andrea Falk, Paule Bertrand, and Lu Vi Hong. Resumed training at the Lalonde Academie.
1990-1993Trained in Northern Shaolin, Southern Fist, Five Forms/Eight Methods, Plum Blossom Stake, and Tong Bei under Carl Wei.
1992-1993Trained in Long Fist, Eagle Claw, Faan Zi, Bagua, etc. under Yulan Tang.
